Body Scrubs

Body Scrubs

Scrubs cleanse and exfoliate your skin, leaving it extremely smooth! There are two types of scrubs: salt and sugar. Salt scrubs are more intense exfoliators, making sugar scrubs more ideal for sensitive skin. I recommend starting with a lighter sugar scrub, and working up to a salt scrub if you need the extra exfoliation.

Basic Scrub Recipe: 2 parts sugar/salt:1 part oil; can also add 10 drops of essential oil (e.o.) per 1/2 cup sugar:1/4 cup oil mixture

This recipe is really versatile: you can use brown or white sugar (brown sugar is the gentlest option), and also any type of oil. More information on different oils and their benefits for skin: http://www.popsugar.com/beauty/Best-Oils-Hair-Skin-35814000

I do not recommend using these on your face: unless you have spot tested with each ingredient and know how your skin reacts to them, or you can make sure to use non-comedogenic oils. My mother and I cannot use coconut oil on our faces: it breaks us out. This is actually very common, since coconut oil has a comedogenic factor of 4 (the scale goes from 0-5, 5 being highly comedogenic: pore blocking and blackhead causing).

My favorite mixture so far: 1 cup white sugar + 1/4 cup coconut oil + 1/4 cup avocado oil + 10 drop rose geranium e.o. + 10 drops lavender e.o. (as seen in cover photo). Regular table sugar is fine for these scrubs; it is not being ingested and is easy and inexpensive to find. When it comes to salt, there are some salts that are more beneficial to your skin than others: this is due to specific minerals and nutrients. The type of salt that is most generally used for scrubs is sea salt (either fine or coarsely ground, depending on preference). I have read that Dead Sea salt is very mineral dense and a great choice for skin care, but I have not tried it yet. Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is also an interesting choice; the sulfate has the ability to draw out toxins through the skin, while the magnesium is absorbed into the body where it has tons of beneficial effects: reduces inflammation, aids in muscle and nerve function, and also creates a sense of calm and relaxation. More on epsom salts here: http://www.saltworks.us/salt_info/epsom-uses-benefits.asp

There are plenty of additional add-ins that are amazing for your skin; oatmeal (cleansing & soothing), raw honey (moisturizing & antibacterial), coffee grounds (antioxidants fight premature aging, caffeine reduce inflammation and reduce dark circles), cinnamon (antibacterial)… Have fun with it! Of course you can change the ratio and add more sugar/salt for a crunchier scrub.
