One of the most common DIY oral care products is the coconut oil toothpaste, which consists of: coconut oil, baking soda, and peppermint essential oil. I tried it… 3 times… ick. It was really salty and bitter from the baking soda. I experimented with adding stevia to sweeten it but it it still tasted quite unpleasant (I don’t normally use stevia and don’t really like it anyways, so I should have known I also wouldn’t like it in the toothpaste). I also tried changing the flavor to wild orange essential oil, but it was still terrible. My brother would still use it because he liked the idea of using something more natural, but the flavor was so bad that he could never brush his tongue! I had to find an alternative.
I found a recipe for a tooth powder that sounded like it would clean well AND taste good, could this be? I was very excited to try it, especially since I already had all the ingredients on hand. I was actually a bit hesitant about the powder part; I had never tried tooth powder and I thought that I would hate the texture. Nevertheless, I was definitely willing to test it out, especially after the epic fail with the paste.
I changed the recipe to fit my taste; omitted the stevia, baking soda, and salt, and added eucalyptus essential oil and ground turmeric. Turmeric is a natural teeth whitener and also heals gum inflammation. Eucalyptus e.o. is germicidal, so it fights cavities and plaque! I wanted to super-charge the powder and to make a powerful cleansing and whitening product.
It came out amazing! My mother and brother also both use it now and are extremely happy with it. Upon first brush the whitening effects were noticeable, but that is expected since turmeric and activated charcoal are both teeth whiteners! The cinnamon and clove make it taste very good; and your mouth feels super fresh after using it due to their antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Also, Adam can go back to having a healthy tongue, because he can brush it with no problem when using this powder: hooray for proper oral hygiene! Be aware that because of the activated charcoal and the clay, your teeth will obviously look blackish grey while brushing, but there is absolutely no stain from this after rinsing. I highly recommend not omitting the activated charcoal: it detoxifies the mouth and whitens teeth really well. We love this powder!
